It grows only on a nearly vertical cliff in the mountains of Nueve Leon, Mexico. After a few years, the tips of the green upturned leaves develop small white tufts of hair. Exact hardiness is not yet known, but in free it grows along with Agave bracteosa, victoria regina and lechuguilla.
