The exterior of the cap is constructed of fine quality thick field gray Mtzentrikot with a twill weave consisting of parallel running ribs. It features a traditional high peak crown with tightly seated and even black piping, indicative of Combat Engineers, running along the crown of the cap, as well as the top and bottom edges of the cap band.
